Why would you subject yourself to the scrutiny of writing a book— one of the hardest artistic endeavors ever, only to face the hardship of getting it published, all so that no one except for your family members buy it (and you really don’t want them reading it in the first place— maybe you don’t want anyone to read it at all!)
The thing is— you really don’t have to be a writer if you don’t want to be. You could just stop writing, shelve your projects and move on with your life.
You’ll certainly be more sane.
It might even be healthy.
If the thought of this feels like an avalanche cascading in your chest, then don’t worry— you can write. You do write. You write well. No one is saying that you *can’t* write, and if the idea of quitting makes you panic, then good news— you’ve passed the test. You are a part of the club.
But if any part of you feels relief at the idea of not writing— then don’t. This isn’t Sons of Anarchy. We aren’t a ride or die kind of gang. We are more of a come as you are, when you please kind of gang.
The best part? You can still call yourself a writer.
Writing isn’t a state of being. It’s an action— once it’s done, it’s done. Perpetual motion is not necessary to pay your dues for your imaginary writer’s license.
Harper Lee wrote one book, would you call her anything but a writer?
This is your permission slip to be and do what ever the hell you want. But if you do decide to write, even knowing that it is often lonely, vulnerable, and frankly devastatingly embarrassing, then that’s love.
Loving writing is a good enough excuse to write. Poet Jack Gilbert said:
“We must risk delight. We must have the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of this world.”
Let’s face it— the world is ruthless. If writing offers a small pocket of joy in your life then hold onto it and leave the rest. Stop worrying about what others think and just play in your imaginary playground.
You don’t have to be a writer, but if you choose to be one, then make sure you tune in to the newsletter every Wednesday at 10:00 AM EST. As we are nearing the end of the year, I am developing content for the new year. I would love to hear your feedback, please answer the poll below or add your suggestions in the comments!
I love this article.
